The way that some are currently using the “Race Card” is to quell dissent. The way President Carter is using the topic of race is to paint all white opposition to President Obama as racially motivated. We will never remove the “Race Card” from public discourse as long as there is some advantage to using it. What we are currently seeing in our public dialogue is a return of disrespect. People have not been respecting the office of the President since Nixon. For those who do not know their history, this level of disrespect is nothing new. If you are driving through Illinois near Springfield, stop and tour Lincoln’s presidential library. I believe all black people should take their kids to this library at least once. The things that where printed in the newspapers of the day about Lincoln, particular the political cartoons makes the posters that current protesters carry look tame by comparison.

I think there is a complete lack of respect for President Obama because of his race. How can you not believe race is a factor when have a congressman (Joe Wilson) call the President of the United States a liar during his speech on national tv. This was the FIRST time that has ever happened and Wilson dismisses as "spontaneous reaction". The people that are holding these racist signs depicting President Obama are not upset with him over his policies, they are upset because he is President of the United States.

Of course there are racist people expressing themselves at the various tea parties and rallies. As you stated, they are a “fringe element” and not a large of a percentage. The majority of the people in opposition to Obama’s policies are not racially motivated. They simply disagree with his policies and the direction the country is headed in. Unfortunately the racists are adding their comments to this debate, which just creates a distraction. All of this, while the deficit increases and the president adds more and more spending programs. 900 billion for healthcare and nearly a trillion or the student loan program takeover. Could one of you true believers out there explain why the government needs to take over and fund the student loan program with taxpayer dollars?

I have no doubt that the parties involved in bashing the President's speech on education are racists.
Many are so absorbed with the fact that there is a black president in charge rather than the principles.
His speech was not new. In fact his agenda is not new, rather it be about healthcare or the economy; but he is!
He is a very new face in the country as well a globally. He has been scruntinized 100 times more than any president begining with his first 100 days in office. If people could just ignore the face and the race they may be able to hear and see we are all on the same page afterall. We as Americans, no matter the race or ethnic background desire the same things, have similar concerns and share many of the same values.
I appreciate my current president and any president, regardless of race, creed or party that has the people's best interest at heart.

Of course there was some political motivation on the part of the Florida GOP leader. I believe he lowered the bar for political discourse in our country. All presidents deserve the right to address the nation’s youth. I believe the only thing that was a screw up was the attempt to create a lesson plan. I grant that this was an innocent mistake by someone who really admires the President. That person didn’t even realize that it is unlawful for the federal government to enforce a lesson plan.

The reaction by some parents also indicate that people’s perception of the President has shifted greatly since the inauguration. I personally know several conservatives, libertarians and centrists who voted for President Obama (nearly all of them white people.) They believed that he was a pragmatic, slightly left of center politician whom they could trust. These people gave him a pass on all the controversies, because he seemed so reasonable. Based on the appearance and demeanor of the first family, these same people concluded that this was an acceptable image for an American president. One we can all be proud of. After all this proves we are no longer a racist country if we elect him. He can’t possibly be the socialist that the right-wing media was screaming about last year. By his appointments and his actions he has betrayed those same people who thought he was a moderate in liberal clothing.

If he is not a socialist the President definitely has socialist tendencies. He strongly believes in government control of large segments of the economy, income redistribution and has surrounded himself with some far-left Czars and staff members. People are watching the country change into something that they do not recognize and they are scared. I think this moment revealed that for some people their emotions about the state of the economy and the path of the government are reaching a crisis level. I hope the President recognizes the mood of the country and retools his agenda. He needs to settle the country down before somebody does something stupid.

I think it's a very sad day in America when we deny our kids the opportunity to hear how important education is and an encouraging word to stay in school and do well, regardless of who it's coming from. To deny kids the opportunity to hear from the leader of their country is definitely a political agenda with no real concern for what is best for the kids. If there were real concern about the message the educators should do what they do with all their lessons, review it first then decide if they should share it with the kids. Instead, they are teaching kids to be judgmental by listening to the comments of others rather than use their own minds to make their own decisions.

Are you trying to label me? I am conservative and that does not mean I agree with every tenet of the Republican party. In fact if there was truly a party that believed in small government and the decentralization of power, I would be voting for them. Both Republicans and Democrats have been for big government. The ballooning of the deficit under Bush was inexcusable. Sooner or later we as a nation will have to pay the bills we are making. We can’t keep borrowing forever.

About healthcare, as I stated in my second response to “Health Care Public Option,” nobody is suggesting that our system is fine the way it is. We are saying we do not want a UK or Canada style system. I believe that the government’s role is to be the referee for our Capitalist system, not the replacement for it. I believe that our rights where spelled out in the Constitution. There isn’t a line in it about medical care. Since medical care is the product of someone else’s labor, I do not believe we have a right to it. Ultimately healthcare is provided by private industry (doctors and nurses) and they deserve to be compensated for their services. As for the “uninsured,” how many of those are illegal immigrants and how many just need help qualifying for Medicaid? Some of the stories that I’ve heard about the uninsured usually fall in these two camps.

About Katrina, did you know that the Obama administration had its own Katrina period?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_2009_Central_Plains_and_Midwest_ice_storm

In January an ice storm hit the southern midwestern states. It knocked out power for over a week and lot of people died. What was Obama doing? He was busy pushing his stimulus package. The people dying in this case where poor and working class rural whites (probably not Obama voters.) Obama didn’t even pay these people lip service nor did the media tell their story. After all, who cares about white people? Certainly not the Federal Government. I believe the reason the Federal Government did anything about Katrina was due to the media coverage. Fortunately these people didn’t wait for help from the government, they helped themselves..

About Social Security and Medicare, I really think we need to get that system out of the hands of politicians as well. With the Baby Boomers starting to retire the system cannot support the number of people who will soon be dependent on it. I believe that politicians will raise the eligibility age to the point where those of us on the tail end of the Baby Boom will die before we collect a cent. In other words, they will begin to ration it. Just what people fear will happen if the government runs healthcare.

Outstanding! You are finally beginning to debate on your blog instead of channeling the administration. Nobody is suggesting the status quo. For my small business clients, they would love to see the cost of their health care insurance be reduced. I believe that the key to reviving our economy is to help small business. I would be willing to support any measure to reduce this cost except putting the taxpayer on the hook for it. As a nation we have not tried anything to reduce healthcare cost. Now you are arguing that the only way out is a thousand plus page bill that ends with a government take-over of our health care system. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and slow the train down before we derail the country.

What “for profit” organizations do provide is innovation and efficiency. Two things that the Government is not known for. Our advanced treatments for various diseases including the advancement of drugs and gene therapies are all the result of someone chasing a payday. Never underestimate the profit motive in spurring innovation. If the President wants a good place to start with healthcare (aside from tort reform) he should allow competition across state lines for health insurance. Then we can follow that up with standardized pricing for medical procedures (instead of the sliding scale we have now.) I know what an oil change cost for my car costs, but I haven’t got a clue about the cost of a cholesterol test. The American public that is balking at this healthcare bill would like to see small steps. Right now it appears that what we have is a liberal wish list, that may solve the problem or may not. The one thing it does do is guarantee the Government controls the healthcare system.

Speaking of the President. He is tied to lobbyist and special interest groups. I am thinking of trial lawyers, environmentalist organizations, community organizations (ACORN), unions and big business. If you don’t believe the big business part, look how much money he gave to them as part of the bailout. And look at how much money big business gave to his election campaign. I hate to break it to you, Barack Obama is a politician (trained in the Chicago way.) The only thing different between him and all the white men that came before is his skin color and his lack of high level leadership experience. The reason his approval rating is falling is because he is letting his base define the content of his legislation. A rookie mistake if there ever was one.
